Mountain Kilimanjaro is found in Tanzania and stands at a height of 19,341 feet or 5,895 meters. This snow-capped mountain is the highest peak on the African continent as well as the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Kilimanjaro is the highest walkable mountain in the world. To reach its summit (Uhuru peak), you have to walk through its five different climate zones which include; the rainforest, alpine desert, and the glacial Arctic.

Although Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed without any special equipment, or unique mountaineering training, we have to mention that it is not easy to summit the ‘Roof of Africa!’  A good Kilimanjaro climbing tour operator is equally important to ensure that your hike is not only a successful climb, but also a safe Mount Kilimanjaro trek. Choosing the best route between the seven Kilimanjaro trails, requires an experienced Mount Kilimanjaro trekking expert, and we provide accurate and up to date advice and consultation at no cost.

How much does it cost to climb Kilimanjaro?

The average cost of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is USD 2100 to USD 5000 depending on the route that you take, and the company that is planning your climb. We offer affordable Kilimanjaro hikes through all Mount Kilimanjaro trails.

Briefly, it does not take spending a fortune for a safe, comfortable and successful climb. However, the price below USD 1600 should alert you, as it is the first signal that your tour operator forsakes basic safety measures and hires semi-qualified (or unqualified altogether) guides and porters, who agreed to work for a pay far below the market average.

Which route to choose for hiking Kilimanjaro?

Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed through seven main routes. These Kilimanjaro trails takes you from the slopes of this amazing mountain, to Uhuru Peak which is the Summit of the Mt Kilimanjaro. Among these Mount Kilimanjaro routes; 6 of them start on the Southern side of the mountain while one only approaches the summit from the Northern side close the Kenyan border; which is the Rongai Route.

Marangu Route is the easiest route to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, of all Kilimanjaro trails that we use with our hikers. Rongai Route is one of the camping routes but also fairley and easy route and therefore  a good route for amature hikers.

Those seeking seclusion, scenic value and good acclimatization transition should consider Lemosho or Northern Traverse. A pocket-friendly and picturesque Machame provides good acclimatization transition, though it is a bit crowded during the high season.

The list of Mount Kilimanjaro climbing routes is as below;

  1. Marangu Route aka ‘Coca-Cola Route’
  2. Machame Route aka ‘Whiskey Route’
  3. Lemosho Route
  4. Rongai Route
  5. Umbwe Route
  6. Shira Route
  7. Northern Circuit Route

The above 7 trails of Mount Kilimanjaro have a duration that ranges from 5 Days as the shortest time a standard trek can take, up to 9 Days depending on which route you choose to use.

It is very worth noting that the longer the climb takes, with enough acclimatization time, the better the chances of going to the Summit of the Mount Kilimanjaro; ‘roof top of Africa’.

Which is the best route to climb Mount Kilimanjaro?

The best route to climb Mount Kilimanjaro is Lemosho route especially when done for 7 Days which allows for enough acclimatization.

Lemosho is the best route due to first the low traffic along that trail, so it is a quiet and somewhat ‘private’ but also it is one of the most scenic routes on Mount Kilimanjaro.

The route has a high success rate when you allow yourself enough time to acclimatize, but also when you have done enough training before you come to Tanzania to attempt Kilimanjaro; which is the highest freestanding volcano of the world. Lemosho route has great panoramic views all almost all the way to the summit.

For most climbers going to the summit is the biggest priority, but other factors also determine which the best trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. We have a few factors that we have explained here.

If you are looking to climb Kilimanjaro along the quietest route which is the least crowded, then Rongai Route is your best bet. Rongai route approaches the summit from the Northern side closer to the Kenyan border. The starting point of this route is Nalemoru Gate.

Which Route has the best Success Route on Mount Kilimanjaro?

In case you are looking for a route that gives you the highest chance of summiting Uhuru Peak, then Lemosho route and the Machame Route hiked over a 7 or 8 days period.
